STEPPS is an important first step toward advancing understanding of suicidal thoughts and behaviors during the perinatal period.
Because pregnancy and motherhood are often viewed as positive events, there is a wide-held assumption that women are rarely suicidal during the perinatal period.
In fact, suicide is the second leading cause of mortality among postpartum women and accounts for 20% of deaths for the first year after birth.
STEPPS is a collaborative study between researchers at the University of Oregon and University of Utah. Learn more about our study staff below.
Our research will follow women from their 3rd trimester of pregnancy through 4 months postpartum to learn more about how suicidal thoughts affect mothers.
