parent mental health research clinic

What do we do?

We conduct research on intergnerational transmission of mental health disorders which informs treatments for parent mental health, parenting, and child developmental outcomes.

We strive to reduce suffering for families with a parent who has a mental health disorder.

Much of our research has focused on parents who have borderline personality disorder (BPD), which is marked by extreme emotional instability, interpersonal chaos, impulsivity, and identity disturbance. See completed studies.

We have examined the effectiveness of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for treating parents with BPD. We also study the outcomes for children of parents who have been treated for mental health problems.

STEPPS Study

We are currently recruiting women in their third trimester of pregnancy to participate in a new study about the emotional changes that occur over the perinatal period.
